About telehandlers

A telehandler swaps the vertical mast of a forklift for a telescopic boom. That lets it place a pallet of bricks onto a scaffold lift, load a feed hopper over a barrier, or reach across a trench. Fixed-boom machines are the staple of building sites, farms and merchants' yards across Nottinghamshire; rotating (roto) telehandlers add a slewing turntable and are used more like a crane.

Attachments are a big part of the picture. Pallet forks are standard, but buckets, sweepers, man baskets, crane jibs and grabs all fit the quick-hitch, and each changes the load chart. Reading a boom-angle load chart, and understanding how extending the boom slashes the safe working load, is the heart of the course. So is the ground: a telehandler lifts heavy loads to height on sites where the surface is anything but flat and solid.

Our instructors train on your machine at your site, whether that is a depot yard, a farm or a live construction site with its own induction and permit arrangements. Candidates usually hold a counterbalance or rough-terrain certificate already; if not, the novice course covers the full syllabus from scratch.

What the course covers

  • Pre-use checks including boom, hoses, quick-hitch, tyres and stabilisers
  • Load charts: boom angle, extension and attachment weights
  • Ground conditions, outriggers and levelling
  • Lifting to height and placing loads at reach
  • Travelling with loads on rough terrain and slopes
  • Attachment changes and the effect on capacity

Telehandler (Telescopic Handler) training questions

Is this the CPCS or NPORS card?

We issue an RTITB, AITT or ITSSAR accredited certificate, which is recognised by the HSE and widely accepted off construction sites and by many principal contractors. If a site specifically demands a CPCS or NPORS card, tell us and we will advise.

Can you train on a live building site?

Yes, provided the site manager can give us a safe area and the candidates are inducted. We work around site hours and permit systems.

Do you cover rotating telehandlers?

Yes. Roto telehandlers are treated as a separate category because of the slewing function. Ask for a quote for the specific machine.
